Sanibel Island Smart Travel Tips

We look forward to having you stay with us and hope Gulf Breeze Cottages will become your home away from home. Here are some helpful travel tips for you as you plan your vacation.

When to Visit
When temperatures up north plummet, snowbound folks head south. The greatest number of visitors, and peak rates, are found February through aproximately mid-April...but we have great weather year 'round! If you're flexible with your travel dates, consider the end of April and all of May. Spring break is over, most of the "snowbirds" have headed back north, and school isn't yet out for the summer. All that combines to give you less competition on the beach for shells and for tables at the restaurants!

Early December is a special time to visit and a wonderful time to do your holiday shopping. The shops all have pre-holiday sales and a vast collection of gifts. Be sure to join in the holiday spirit at our not-to-be-missed annual Luminary Festival.

Pack Light
Leave most of your clothing and all of your cares at home. If you're coming during the summer months, pack cotton - living in a tropical climate in synthetics is hard. Many ladies take a light sweater or shawl into air conditioned restaurants all year. Visitors during the winter months should plan to wear layers of clothing that can easily be added or removed as needed. Shorts and t-shirts are fine during the day but add a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt to your suitcase too. Better yet, buy one when you get here! You'll be happy you did in the evenings and on the rare occassion when a cool wind blows down the beach.

Travel Light
Speaking of your suitcase...with the constantly changing restrictions for air travel, some folks are opting to ship their luggage ahead of time via United Parcel. With some planning, your belongings will be waiting for your arrival. There are two island businesses that can handle the return process for you so that your bags arrive back home a few days after you do.

Tennis & Golf
Tennis and Golf are both very popular sports on the islands and are played year-round. For the tennis player, both clay and HydroGrid courts are available near-by and lessons are available at nearby resorts. On Sanibel, golfers can take advantage of 2 championship courses, an 'aqua' driving range and practice greens. Lessons are also available.
